Services and Facilities

The Pet Emergency Room has been serving the Greater Miami Area since 2007. We are a fully-equipped and prepared to handle any emergency with skill, speed and compassion. We treat all kinds of pet emergencies and have the ability to offer all levels of care, even the most critical patients. Our veterinarians and nurse technicians are on site at all times, and have access to board-certified specialists, so you can sure your pet will get the best care.

The Pet Emergency Room is affiliated with The South East Veterinary Referral Center (SVRC) and we consult with their specialists as needed.


Emergency & Critical Care Staff Doctor

Dr. Jessie Hatfield received her B.A. in Biology from The Colorado College in 1997, and her DVM from the University of Florida in 2002. She has been practicing in her hometown of Miami, spending the last year working as an emergency veterinarian. She has interests in veterinary soft tissue surgery and emergency medicine, as well as internal medicine and ultrasonography, and has training in ultrasonography. She loves South Beach and feels very fortunate to be able to practice high-quality medicine at SVRC and The PET Emergency Room.

Anesthesia and Analgesia Residency Trained

Dr. Marco Ruffato was born and raised in Italy. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Padua in 2003 and completed an internship in London and Canada. He has worked internationally between UK, Canada, Italy and USA. Earlier in his career, Dr. Ruffato enjoyed working with horses and developed strong skills in equine orthopedic surgery. In 2009 he completed his residency in anesthesia and analgesia at Tufts University in Massachusetts. Dr. Ruffato started Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia Specialists (VAAS) in 2013 and brings his expertise in pain management, anesthesia for critical care patients and intensive care medicine to The PET Emergency Room. Dr. Ruffato is also Certified in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Ruffato enjoys traveling, cooking, fishing and snowboarding.

Dr. Raquel Fuentes attended the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. After becoming a veterinarian she moved to California where she completed both a general and an internal medicine internships. Later on, she continued training in Internal Medicine while living in Michigan, where she trained in ultrasound, endoscopy, and management of patients with chronic and critical illnesses.
Dr. Fuentes has made Florida her new home over the last year and looks forward to meeting and caring for all her new patients.

Emergency & Critical Care Staff Doctor

Dr. Rachel, as she prefers to be called, grew up in rainy Seattle, but she has always been a South Floridian at heart. After graduating from Stanford University with honors, Dr. Rachel had a successful and rewarding career working in Washington D.C. for The Humane Society of the United States. Helping animals and their parents is her passion, so she made her way to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine where she graduated with awards and an interest in animal shelter medicine. After an intensive internship in Santa Cruz, California, however, she was bitten by the emergency bug, and moved back to Seattle to practice emergency medicine for over ten years. She moved to South Florida over two years ago with her Italian paramour, three cats, and one wiener dog to enjoy the sun and water. An avid swimmer, scuba diver, snorkeler, and sun worshipper, she loves every day in South Florida! Dr. Rachel will be practicing her Spanish with you, so be patient, she wants to be fluent as soon as possible.


Lissette Cepero, DVM
Emergency & Critical Care Staff Doctor

Dr. Cepero was born and raised in Miami, where she attended the University of Miami and earned a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Chemistry. During this time, she worked as a veterinary assistant in several area clinics and developed a love of veterinary medicine and a deep appreciation for the human animal bond.
She earned her DVM at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She worked in general practice in Miami and also served as an overnight emergency veterinarian in the Knoxville area before returning to Miami in 2014. Areas of professional interest include small animal internal medicine, emergency and critical care, and anesthesia and pain management. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, South Florida Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
Dr. Cepero enjoys spending time with her large extended family and her two cats. She also enjoys running, weight lifting, baking and reading novels.
